Yanghwajin Hall Digital Renovation | 2011-2015

The purpose of this project was designing and developing interactive media art content for renovating existing attractions. For celebrating 100th anniversary of introducing Korean version of bible to South Korea, I designed an projected three interactive new media contents of 'Holy Wall', 'Holy Ocean' and 'Holy Pottery'. This interactive exhibition hall has been a semi-permanent exhibition.

Holy Wall An interactive media facade which sheds new lights on celebration of 100 year of Korean Bible with natural touch interaction. I designed the system and produces all hardware form capacitive sensor to beam projector.

Tools Arduino, Capacitive sensor, LED lighting, customized kiosk and 3D Projection mapping were built for this installation. the sensor was located in the middle of the wooden sculpture it was hard to make stability. I and my teammate realized the ground connection was required for solving this and it was successful. The led underneath of the sculpture played a key role which is not only working as a visual effect when audiences triggers the interaction, but also visual indicator which showed us the capacitive sensor's current status.

At the first renewal project, I designed an edge-blending projection system with two projector and replaced into a full-HD projector, EBSON EB-5250. The main reason that I have built this system was insufficient budget. Full-HD projectors were too expensive at that time and I had to fill the large wall by all means. calculating the projection angle and distance was not easy since the irregular patterns of existing walls didn't give us the right-angles position of projectors.

Holy Ocean

For providing deep experience of water way, I filled the narrow hallway with three projectors using edge-blending, and developed interactive foot print tracking with Sejun Jeong. The water symbolises the way of foreign missionaries' coming to Korea after being summoned. Detecting audiences' foot track and creating real-time ripple effects was a big challenge for our team since we had no experience for that. I borrowed numerous cameras from different vendors and tested with software. we finally found the stable system with openFrameworks and two USB infrared cameras. Also built edge-blending system using three projectors. for maximizing the throw distance, I purchased 90-degree signal converter for each projectors.
