Girasol

White Light, Infinite Colors

Year
2020
Stack
openFrameworks, Arduino

An interactive installation that creates dynamic, magical light reflections using dichroic panels, stepper motors, and projection mapping. The projector emits only white light, while the dichroic panels refract it into a full spectrum of colors.

At AV&C, I researched and developed both the miniature-scale model and the generative graphic engine for this large-scale, software-driven physical artwork.

DICHROIC HENGE

OPENFRAMEWORKS ARDUINO STEPPER MOTORS

An interactive installation that creates dynamic and magical light reflection using dichroic panels, stepper motors and projection mapping. The projector is going with only white colors and the dichroic panels are depicting all colors shown. In AV&C, researched and developed the this miniature scale model as well as its generative graphic engine for a large scale, software-driven physical artwork and it has been accepted to Electric Castle 2019 with the new title Girasol. Because of COVID-19, I’m praparing to launch it in 2020. source code

Electric Castle 2019

Its large scale was accepted to Electric Castle 2019 under the title Girasol, a major music and arts festival held annually at Banffy Castle in Romania, known for blending historic architecture with contemporary performances and installations. Within the castle’s northwest tower, six large transparent panels rotate in slow choreography, their dichroic coating transforming light into shifting fields of color across the space. The work unfolds in two distinct modes: Daytime Mode: Sunlight is directed inside through a solar tube, meeting the rotating panels to create organic, slowly evolving color patterns. The atmosphere is contemplative, encouraging quiet reflection. Nighttime Mode: Artificial light from projectors cuts through the panels, producing vivid chromatic beams and graphic, rhythmic patterns. Unlike the chance-based daytime state, this mode is intentional and performative, with light spilling through the windows to form a luminous beacon visible from outside the castle.

Although the event was ultimately canceled due to COVID-19 and the final installation never took place, seeing our company’s name on the poster made me feel like a rockstar!
